The “Dissonance Meter” - Main game mechanic.
I figured I’d talk a little bit about our main (proposed) game mechanic.
With each level of the game, there will be unique music. Once you start playing, the music starts. A meter will appear at the top of the screen, starting out full. This meter represents the timing of the music with your timing. Your goal, as the player, is to keep the music going.
As you get hit by enemies and take damage, as you stop, or slow down, the meter will fall. As the meter falls, the music will start to slow and distort - and so will the environment around you. It will become blurry, monsters will become bigger, platforms may fall and disappear. Basically - if you don’t keep up with the music, you get left behind, and once the meter hits empty, you’ve failed.
I’d also like to include small powerups, bonuses as you go along that will restore your dissonance meter by 10% or so, so if you do fall a little behind, you can catch back up as long as you’re not doing too bad.

What is the Dissonance project you ask?
What is it?
The Dissonance project is planned to be a fun indie sidescroller game, centering heavily around music. We want to make an interesting game with a new concept, that will be available to everyone.
Who’s making it?
Right now, only 3 people are involved. That is definitely going to grow. For the moment though, it’s me (LKGC), my business partner, and my lovely girlfriend designing the concept art.
Who will be able to play?
Everyone! We’re planning on developing the game in Java, so that all Windows, Mac and Linux users can play.
Will it cost anything?
Eventually. Testing will probably be open to a wide group of people, who will probably get a major discount on the final game(which will be pretty cheap anyways).
When will it be done?
Frankly, I have no idea. We’re just barely getting started. But, if you keep checking back here, and eventually at our project page that we have yet to set up, you can watch our progress unfold!
How can I help?
If you’re a digital musician, artist, or Java programmer, you can email me at lastknowngoodconfiguration@gmail.com, otherwise keep watch here, we plan to have a kickstarter page where folks can donate to help the project pretty soon.
Who are you?
My name is Morgan, I’m the creator of the project, and the man with all the ideas in his head. You can call me LKGC :] I’m a web developer and database administrator that’s getting into game development. I hope to make my ideas a reality.
